She grew up in Jamaica in a rich family. She wanders the island, learning about the world. The fact that she is white creates tension between her and the Jamaican people. Her family also has a lot of money and most people there are poor. Tia becomes her only real friend. She loses that friend mainly because Tia is black and she is white. Jamaican people didn’t like her family. One night the slaves burn down her house, laughing and throwing stones at the family. This shocks Antoinette. She likes the Jamaican people. During the fire she sees Tia and thinks, â€Å"I will live with Tia and be like her. Not to leave Coulibri. Not to go. Not. † Just as she thinks this, Tia throws a stone at her. Emotionally, this is the start of much devastation in her life. Later on in the novel, Antoinette is married to Rochester. At first, they seem happy together. Antoinette shows him the island she grew up on and tells him stories of her childhood. Antoinette feels love again. Little does she know, Rochester feels nothing but lust for her. Rochester leads Antoinette on even more by having sex with her. Antoinette is the happiest she has ever been in her life. Rochester still feels nothing. He thinks, â€Å"As for the happiness I gave her, that was worse than nothing. I did not love her. I was thirsty for her, but that is not love. † He continues to lead her on until one day where he suddenly stops having sex with her. Antoinette goes from an extreme high, to a low point in her life. She has no one. The madness sets in. Rochester receives a letter from a man named Daniel Cosway, who tells him of Antoinette’s family history. He also tells him that he is Antoinette’s half-brother and madness runs in the family. Daniel warns Rochester that Antoinette is crazy as well. Rochester believes him and continues to push Antoinette away. One day Rochester has sex with Amelie, a servant. He doesn’t try to hide it. Antoinette hears and is hurt beyond repair. Because of this, she is more than crazy. Antoinette becomes a love crazy lunatic. She loses another person I her life whom she loved, because of this, She is not repairable. They leave the island and Rochester locks her up. He doesn’t even try to help her. When a person is repeatedly subjected to this kind of cruel, evil-hearted treatment, the only course for that person is insanity. Heredity is not the source of the insanity though. There is nothing hereditary about what Rochester did to Antoinette. Even if madness didn’t run in the family, Antoinette probably would have the same reaction. It doesn’t help that after the cruel things that Rochester did, she had no way to cope with them. Christophine couldn’t help because Rochester threatened her. Common torts that are prevalent in the Australian Law are in relation to negligence, defamation, trespass, private nuisance, misrepresentation, damaging economic interests, and in cases of breach of public duties (Leon 2015). The torts that are applicable in case of business situation are known as economic torts. Business torts or economic torts are the wrong acts which are carried out against business entity. Legal action was brought out by Jazmine Oyston against that of her school that was St. Patricks College situated in New South Wales because of negligence. Jazmine made an allegation that during enrollment she was injured and had to bear the brunt of harassment along with bullying which made her susceptible to depression, anxiety as well as panic attacks. Her account suggested the fact that the policies of school could not save her from the grip of harm that could be easily recognized. The court gave the verdict that risk of harm could be foreseen from before and even the school had foreseen such a thing. The students had to face bullying and harrassment from some quarter on account of the negligence of the school (Stickley 2016). The court highlighted the policies of the school and other steps taken by the school was sufficient in ensuring whether the school succeeded in fulfilling the duty of care which it was supposed to owe to Oyston. In this case, the court ruled that school has failed in exercising duty of care because though the implementation of school policy were in relation to bullying yet the school has failed in taking such effective steps that could have safeguarded Oyston from the clutches of bullying though they knew about it. Policies were faulty and Oyston had to sustain injuries because of this. The judge professed that reasonable person would have started investigation in regard to the complaints that were made by Jasmine. They would have made such suitable arrangement that would have ensured strict monitoring. In causation terms, judge ruled that the injuries of Oyston were in the form of psychological injury and it was the direct fallout of failure of college in taking necessary steps that could have prevented Oyston from the hands of harassment. The court has pointed out that damages were done to Oyston. In this situation, the plaintiff Oyston had suggested that college was responsible of taking care of her in which they failed and such a breach has resulted in damages. The college lost out in providing adequate care when it could be foreseen by college. It dealt with deceptive conduct, unfair terms and for misleading public. The customers should receive goods of good quality and statements of persons in regard to quality and value should match when goods are delivered and services are provided to the customers (Latimer 2016). Italy during WWII essays During World War II, Italy became involved and would face fighting against a variety of people at first were allies with Germany, but later became part of the Allied Power, with Britain, the United States, Canada, etc. During this time, in Italy, the leader(Il Duce) was Benito Mussolini, which did not help because they later found that his intentions were not what they had thought previously. Later he was taken out of office abd murdered by the mob.Italy never truly became part of the war until the beaches of Sicily was invaded, in July of 1943.The Germans were in Italy which they would use to find against the Allies. After Allied victory in North Africa, the Allies decided to storm the beaches of Sicily. They attacked what they considered to be Italys underbelly, as a way to get to the mainland, and attack Germany. They attacked in July of 1943. None of the Italians were enthusiastic toward war and wanted to avoid it completely, but they fought right along sides the Germans to try to keep the Allies away from the mainland. This plan failed, the Germans lost around 12,000 people and the Italians killed or captured was about 145,000 people. This is their greatest loss in only one battle. On September 8, 1943, Italy signed a take-it-or-leave-it surrender to the Allies. On September 9th, 1943, the Allies attacked Italys mainland, as a way to try to confuse the Germans. The Germans and the Allies fought for nine days in this battle. The Germans were unable to hold back the Allied powers, but were willing to give up most of Italy. Now, as the fighting wore into the fall and winter, they realized there were going to be many problems they experienced. The generalized policies proposed by Wilson could be seen as attempts to make the superpowers act more humbly and provide the smaller countries less reason to fear them. He proposed the abolition of hidden treaties which were considered the primary cause for the war in the first place. Another proposal was to have open sea travel over international waters. Decolonialization and disarmament of all countries aimed at removing the resentful image of the superpowers who had led many smaller countries to enter the war because of their colonial power over them. These measures aimed to cut down the possibility of the superpowers using other nations to aid them in their conflicts. Finally an open trade agreement was proposed which was very much similar to the WTO being implemented today. Great Gatsby And Death Of A Salesman English Literature Essay Marxism is an ideology that was theorised by Karl Marx that is based on the social and economic processes of class formation in a capitalist society. According to Marx there are two classes namely the bourgeoisie and proletariat. The bourgeoisie or ruling class own and control the means of production. They monopolise the political power and put laws in place in order to protect and further their interests. In this way the beliefs and values will reflect and legitimate their rule. Whereas, the proletariat or working class are dispossessed from making their own livelihood, but are forced to sell their labour for survival. If the dominant classs power is accepted as legitimate by the working class, this is known as false consciousness (Longurst, Smith, Bagnall, Crawford Ogborn, 2008). This ideology became the basis of analysing literature, known as Marxist criticism. Marxist critics approach to literature is based on sociological influences, which means that the texts are the result of whichever historical, economic as well as cultural circumstances they were created in. Texts from whichever epoch reveal the dominate classs ideology, thus making them subjective. (Potter, 2010) The Great Gatsby is a novel written by Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel focuses on the lives of the dominant class of a western capitalistic society and how they are shaped by this lifestyle. On the other hand, Death of a Salesman was written by Arthur Miller in 1949. The novel focuses on the life of a family of proletariats and how they are impacted by the bourgeoisies in society. The Great Gatsby does not focus on both economic classes. Instead it focuses on different groups of the dominant class, namely old money and the nouveau riche and as a result this novel reflects the dominant ideology. Although the working class is mentioned, they are ignored for the most part. Old money is represented by East Egg, West Egg represents the nouveau riche and the working class is represented by the Valley of Ashes. The protagonist, Jay Gatsby, is part of the nouveau riche who lives in West Egg. Jay Gatsby moves from being the son of shiftless and unsuccessful farm people (1994 p.105) to becoming the owner of a huge West Egg mansion with a marble swimming pool and over forty acres of lawn and garden (1994 p.11), this shows the possibilities offered by the American dream. Gatsby earns his money through illegal means, which places him in the new money category, and as a result he flaunts by throwing extravagant parties and buying expensive cars. Another reason Gatsby flaunts is to get the attention and win the affection of Daisy, thus treating her as a commodity (Tyson, 2006). Old money, on the other hand, has had money for generations, so they do not flaunt. Old money, people like Tom and Daisy, look down on the nouveau riche, because they got rich quick and, because they are threatening the status quo. Myrtle and George Wilson are working class characters but they have aspirations to move to the upper class. George wants to achieve this through his business. Whereas, Myrtle has an affair with Tom in the hopes that he will eventually marrying her. Both the Wilsons are commodified by the bourgeoisie and disillusioned by the American dream. Myrtles murder is a perfect example of how the bourgeoisie do not suffer the consequences of their actions, because they have money, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessnessà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ and let other people clean up the mess they made (1994 p.186). One person attends Gatsbys funeral, demonstrating that his attainment of the American dream was only an illusion. Death of a Salesman is also a text that reflects the dominant ideology, but in this case the play is written from the point of view of the working class. Although the dominant class has an effect on the main characters they are largely ignored in the play. Willy Loman, the protagonist, is a worn out travelling salesman on the point of a breakdown. But Willy still believes in the capitalist values and has passed on the hopes of success onto his son Biff. Disillusioned by the dominant ideology, Willy is blind to its destructiveness and is fixated with his plans for Biff. Biff, however, has no intentions in following the plans his father has set out for him and intends to pursue a different path, one that Miller associates with socialist society. His lack of drive to follow conventional success is teaching him, not that he is useless, and but that the business world might not be for him and that he is better off without it. He is trying to understand himself and discover his true identi ty. In the beginning of the play, he was not sure of himself and as a result returned home in an attempt to fulfil his fathers dream. Happy, Willy other son, has a good job and would like to go further. He also has uncertainties about his career but has no way to replace it. (Swets Zeitlinger, 1994) The scene in which Howard, Willys young boss, fires Willy is a perfect example of the logic of the capitalist economic instrument. Willy, in an attempt to avoid failure, appeals to Howards conscience, reminding him the he has been a loyal and long term worker for the company, but to no avail. Although Howard is Willys friend and neighbour, he is a business man and abides by the law of profit making first, business is business (2000 p.63), which is absolute in the capitalist business world. Willy refuses a job offer by Charley because he feels its charity and would destroy his image of himself as a self-reliant individual. Willy failure and Biff similar fate makes Willy reject his son. This shows how capitalist value can distort and destroy a meaningful relationship between father and son. (Swets Zeitlinger, 1994) Willy decides to commit suicide in the hopes that his life insurance payment will enable Biff to rise in the world. But, Biff becomes the only one in the play to understand the destructive nature of capitalist values and pities his father, exclaiming: I cant bear to look at his face! (2000 p.115) Both texts show how in a capitalist society money gives power and those who have money control the power of society. As well as in western capitalist society the upper will inevitably oppress the working class and that the American dream is both an illusion and elusive. This essay has discussed how the two texts differ socioeconomically, using a Marxist criticism approach.
